Parent 0:14
Hi.
Teacher 0:16
All right. Hello, sir. Mr. Reid?.
Parent 0:18
Yeah, you can call me Bennett.
Teacher 0:20
All right, Bennett. It’s nice to meet you. I’m Mr. Teacher. It’s a pleasure.
Parent 0:23
Nice to meet you, too.
Teacher 0:25
All right. Well, thank you for coming in and answering my call so that we can discuss Katie.
Parent 0:31
Right?
Teacher 0:31
She’s a wonderful student. It’s a pleasure to have her in my classroom.
Parent 0:35
Aw, thank you.
Teacher 0:35
And I want to think thanks for having her with me. So I wanted to bring you in so that we could work together and come up with a plan to best support Katie going forward. Okay. She’s really wonderful with reading loves reading fiction. I see her reading all the time. Definitely, above her grade level. Her work is always done on time. I have examples of her work if you’d like to see it. All right, so I’ll make sure I bring those to you. And then so the part where I have some concerns and that I would like to best support Katie with is that she tends to be pretty quiet in the classroom environment. So I was wondering what we could best do to support her to help her engage with her peers in the classroom.
Parent 1:19
Right. Hmm. What does that mean?
Teacher 1:26
So if we ask her a question or for discussing with her, she’ll usually give us very little in terms of responses. So she likes to say fine or okay. And she doesn’t really say much beyond that.
Parent 1:38
Mm hmm. Um, is that it or
Teacher 1:47
I’m just she doesn’t appear to be bullied. She does seem like the peers are ignoring her a little bit because she doesn’t talk much. So I just want to figure out how best to support her and her interactions with peers.
Parent 2:01
Have you talked to the peers?
Teacher 2:04
I have tried finding a preferred peer for her and setup group work in order to like help help foster these interactions. But it doesn’t seem to haven’t had any success yet.

Teacher 0:03
Good morning.
Parent 0:05
Good morning.
Teacher 0:07
Thank you so much for coming today. I really appreciate appreciate it.
Parent 0:13
Sure.
Teacher 0:14
Okay, so well, to formally introduce myself, I’m Teacher and—
Parent 0:20
Nice to meet you.
Teacher 0:21
Nice to meet you too. And I just wanted to say what a pleasure it is to be working with Katie this year. She’s a wonderful student. So I do want you to know that…
Parent 0:30
Thank you.
Teacher 0:30
…first and foremost
Parent 0:32
I appreciate that.
Teacher 0:34
I noticed that she has a love for reading.
Parent 0:37
You can call me Bennett, also.
Teacher 0:41
Oh, okay well, pleasure to meet you too Bennett.
Parent 0:45
Go ahead. I’m sorry.
Teacher 0:48
Um, no, yeah, I just wanted to let you know how how great Katie is in class when it comes to her reading times. She said she loves to read.
Parent 1:01
She does. Yes. For sure.
Teacher 1:04
Yes, and I and I think that is wonderful because she she’s actually reading above grade level, so she’s doing really good in reading.
Parent 1:13
Oh, wow. Okay. Doesn’t surprise me, I guess, because she’s she’s always enjoyed it so thankful for that.
Teacher 1:23
Yeah, of course. Um, I would like to kind of touch on a concern I have, however, and it’s nothing super serious. I just want you to know that. I have noticed that, um, recently, Katie has been having a bit of a trouble communicating with her peers.
Parent 1:49
Hmm.
Teacher 1:50
I was just wondering…
Parent 1:50
Meaning?
Teacher 1:51
…if that’s something—
Parent 1:52
I’m not sure what you mean.
Teacher 1:56
Well I’ve noticed that she’s generally very quiet and sometimes will distance herself from her peers.
Parent 2:05
Oh. Huh. Well, uh this doesn’t sound like Katie at all. So it’s, you know, probably something you’re doing.

Start simulation.
Teacher 0:06
Hello, Mr. Bennet I’m Mr. [Teacher], how are you doing?
Mr. Reid 0:08
Good, how are you?
Teacher 0:10
I’m doing well.
Mr. Reid 0:11
Alright.
Teacher 0:13
So before I start the well, I guess yeah, before we start, I just want to do a quick rundown of how I
Mr. Reid 0:20
Sure
Teacher 0:20
expect the meeting to go and things I want to talk about.
Mr. Reid 0:22
And just to just because I’m a nervous dad,
Teacher 0:26
of course
Mr. Reid 0:26
is everything okay?
Teacher 0:27
Yes. Let me start let Yeah, so let me start the meeting actually that way. Everything is perfectly fine with with Katie.
Mr. Reid 0:32
Alright.
Teacher 0:33
it’s just a few a few small things that I wanted to get your opinion on and then and discuss
Mr. Reid 0:36
okay.
Teacher 0:37
So I wanted to start the meeting right with all the all the good things that Katie’s doing.
Mr. Reid 0:43
Alright.
Teacher 0:43
Then I wanted to start talking about the thing I’m concerned about with Katie, which is peer to peer interaction.
Mr. Reid 0:49
Okay
Teacher 0:49
And then uh I wanted to discuss, you know, uh things you have noticed, and then maybe rack
Mr. Reid 0:56
sure
Teacher 0:56
over ways we can we can work on on what I’ve noticed
Mr. Reid 1:00
Okay
Teacher 1:01
well, first of all good things. She’s doing perfectly fine to my class. You know, she’s turning all of her work in on time. She’s incredibly diligent to the point where when she finishes ahead of her work, ahead of everybody else she cracks the book open and starts reading it. So
Mr. Reid 1:17
that’s, that’s Katie.
Teacher 1:19
I found that to be a good motivator of, if you finish this work, then you’re allowed to to read your book.
Mr. Reid 1:25
If she’s
Teacher 1:26
Yeah, so yeah, so all you know, it’s I’m never gonna try to tell a kid to stop reading. That’s very, very good.
Mr. Reid 1:35
Course
Teacher 1:35
A good habit
Mr. Reid 1:35
right
Teacher 1:36
to get in. But yeah, so she is doing fine grades-wise she’s turning in all out for work. And she is reading. What I am concerned with is her peer interactions. So
Mr. Reid 1:50
okay.
Teacher 1:50
what I’ve noticed in class is that she tends, prefers to work individually, even when offered the chance at group work she hasn’t really found a peer she connects with. Um, and when it is, like exclusively group work, she will engage very little with the rest of the peers in the group to the point of just like dividing up the work and then going to work independently on what she’s been
Mr. Reid 2:15
Oh, that’s
Teacher 2:16
A few conversations I’ve tried to to hold with her right have been, you know,
Mr. Reid 2:22
That doesn’t sound like Katie at all. So
Teacher 2:26
Okay
Mr. Reid 2:26
it’s probably something you’re doing.

Teacher 0:07
Hi, Bennett. How are you doing today?
Mr. Reid 0:09
Oh uh, doing alright. How are you doing?
Teacher 0:13
Great. I’m doing great. Um so I was wondering how how are you? Like, how are you doing?
Mr. Reid 0:19
I’m uh I’m doing alright. No complaints. Yeah, but what’s uh, is everything doing doing fine with Katie? Or
Teacher 0:28
Yeah, so I just wanted to talk to you today about Katie. She’s very smart. I enjoy having her my class. She always has these insightful comments that thing, and she’s just really like a delight to have in class. However, I’ve noticed that at times, she does not she’s not very social. And I wanted to talk to you about how we can bring her more out of her bubble and out of her shell so that she gets to interact with more people.
Mr. Reid 0:57
Okay. Interesting. Alright,
Teacher 1:01
yeah, I like, She’s great. And she always but however, whenever we do group work, she’ll kind of just be by herself a little bit. And like, I really want her to enjoy class, I want her to enjoy her time with other people, other students, other friends. So I just wanted to talk to you. So we can come up a way together with like, how we should go from here and how you think would best suit her so that she can really get out of her bubble and she can really succeed not only in school, but also socially, just so she’s more well rounded. Although she’s already great, just so that we can think of more plans of where to go from here.
Mr. Reid 1:39
Okay, um, ah, I gotta say, this doesn’t sound like Katie at all. So it’s probably something you’re doing.

Okay, begin simulation.
Teacher 0:06
Hi, how are you?
Mr. Reid 0:08
Hi, I’m good. How are you?
Teacher 0:11
I’m great. I’m Teacher, it’s great to meet you in person.
Mr. Reid 0:15
Great. And what class do you teach my daughter?
Teacher 0:20
I’m teaching ninth grade earth science for Katie.
Mr. Reid 0:22
Oh, okay.
Teacher 0:24
She’s doing really well in the class and she does everything on time, she seems to really understand and engage with the content which I like to see.
Mr. Reid 0:36
Okay.
Teacher 0:37
Yeah. Um, well, she she’s also a really strong reader. She does really like to read fiction. Sometimes she’s she doesn’t really want to become engaged with her. Her content texts about earth science, but she does really enjoy it, right.
Mr. Reid 0:55
Okay.
Teacher 0:56
Yeah, does she read much at home?
Mr. Reid 0:58
Um, she does. Yeah, she usually has a book in her hand all the time to the point where, you know, we have to tell her to put it down at dinner.
Teacher 1:10
Yeah.
Mr. Reid 1:10
I mean, I guess other parents struggle with cell phones like that. For us. It’s books.
Teacher 1:16
Right, yeah. I guess it’s not a terrible thing, right? She likes to read.
Mr. Reid 1:22
No, I mean, I can’t complain. She’s a good girl. I love my daughter.
Teacher 1:26
Yeah, yeah. She’s really great. I like having her in class.
Mr. Reid 1:30
Thank you.
Teacher 1:31
Yeah, of course. I think that one thing I would like to see more of from Katie would be her engaging with her peers and working together more in groups.
Mr. Reid 1:44
Hmm, okay?
Teacher 1:46
Yeah. Does she talk much about her, her friends at school or anything when she’s at home?
Mr. Reid 1:53
No, not this year.
Teacher 1:56
Is that something that she did it before?
Mr. Reid 2:00
Yeah, I mean, last year, I heard a lot about, you know, friends, classes, lunch and that stuff, but not this year, I have to say. So I mean, what you’re telling me this doesn’t sound like Katie at all. So it’s probably something you’re doing.
